BRAINTREE – A man posing as a UPS delivery driver offering cut- rate, high-end flat-screen televisions bilked a Stoughton woman out of $1,500, Braintree police say.
The 42-year-old woman told police that a man who said he drove trucks for UPS called her business on Saturday. He told her that his brother worked at Sears at South Shore Plaza and that he could get her five 55-inch Samsung 3D televisions for $3,700, police said.
Outside the Sears store, the woman gave the man $1,500 as partial payment and was told to go to the Sears customer pickup area, where he would deliver the TVs.
The man never showed up.
Con artists have been using variations of the same television scam at South Shore Plaza for years. For example, Richard Cabral, 41, of Woburn, went to jail for a year in January 2007 after pleading guilty to scamming at least three people at South Shore Plaza out of nearly $18,000 by promising to sell them bargain- priced TVs.
In many cases, the con artists claim to be delivery drivers and say they can get fantastic deals on televisions thanks to a relative working at Sears. Sometimes they even have store paperwork.
Many of this scam’s victims have been small-business owners.
